Laura Gilliam began her career as a high school English and ESL teacher. After a stint in the Peace Corps in Lesotho, Southern Africa, she moved to Seattle in 1993. She decided to shift to a new career and graduated from Seattle Massage School with honors in 1994.
Since then, Laura’s passion for healing work has continued to grow. She has taken advanced training in neuromuscular therapy, whiplash treatment, British Sports Therapy, cranio-sacral therapy, fascial release and posturology. She received her certification in Integrative Neurosomatic Therapy in 2009 and is currently the only Certified Integrative Neurosomatic Therapist in Washington State.http://www.neurosomaticeducators.com
Laura’s massage philosophy is global to specific. She is a firm believer in moving the fluids of the body with kneading strokes before applying pressure. This relaxes the client and allows her to assess the state of the tissue and tension patterns of muscles so that further treatment is focused and effective. She also often uses fascial unwinding and connective tissue massage techniques to reduce global patterns of tension and stress that resist release by ordinary deep tissue methods. These fascial release methods consist of gentle movement, stretching and compression of tissues to create deep release of chronic tension patterns. After this release, specific deep tissue work is more effective and comfortable.
After 16 years of relaxation and injury treatment massage, Laura has achieved both the skill and clarity to transform clients who are ready for a deep and lasting structural change. Laura has developed Big Change Bodywork to help those clients acheive the results she is capable of enacting.
Laura also uses her teaching abilities in the B3D Body classes. These classes address a need for non-technical yet in depth information about how to move and maintain the human body. It communicates the techniques and practices that will help the lay person support health and balance of the musculoskeletal system.
Laura's writing and speaking talents are put to use in Warrior Fabulous (now a blog and eventually a book and lecture series), where she addresses the metaphysical aspects of health, balance and, well, fabulous-ness.
On the personal level, Laura is married to Bob Huskey and spends her non-professional time homeschooling kids Oliver (12) and Ivy (8) and just feeling proud of step-son David (22). She has been told she is a pretty good cook, dancer and costume designer as well. She lives and works in Seattle, WA.
